Description: St. John's Wort is a herbaceous perennial plant, belonging to the Hypericaceae family. It has a woody branched root that spreads from the base with runners that produce numerous stalks with simple pale green leaves that have dots of black oil glands containing a chemical known as hypericin. The bright golden yellow star shaped flowers, that also have oil glands along the margins, are clustered in groups, followed by numerous small round blackish seeds which have a resinous smell and are contained in a three celled capsule.

Medicinal Uses: St. Johns wort is useful for bronchitis, internal bleeding, healing wounds, and for dirty, septic wounds. It is used to ease depression, headaches, hysteria, neuralgia, shingles, as well as symptoms that occur during menopause.
Precautions and Adverse Reactions: St. John's Wort may potentiate pharmaceutical MAO inhibitors. Avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight.
