Description: Star Anise is the fruit of the Illicium Verum, a small, aromatic, evergreen tree belonging to the Illiciaceae family. The aroma and flavor of star anise is strong, licorice-like and more pungent than anise seed. The star-shaped fruit is an ingredient of the traditional Chinese five-spice powder.

Part Used: Whole seed

Culinary Uses: Star anise is used as substitute for anise in baking as well as in liquor production. It is used to season duck, fish stews, pork, baked goods, tea and coffee. Chew a piece after a meal to freshen the breath. To make a tea, steep one teaspoon of the crushed seed in one cup of boiled water for twenty minutes.

Medicinal Uses: Star anise has been used in a tea as a remedy for colic and rheumatism, and the seeds are sometimes chewed after meals to aid digestion.

Precautions and Adverse Reactions: Some people might experience an allergic response to anise, either dermatologically, respiratory, or gastrointestinal.
