Arrowroot Powder - MARANTA ARUNDINACEA

Description: The Arrowroot plant is a herbaceous perennial belonging to the Marantaceae family. It is a plant with with a creeping rhizome with upward-curving, whitish, scaly, cylindrical tubers. The leaves are light green, with long sheaths and leaf blades. Arrowroot powder is a starch that is made by washing the harvested roots, grinding them into a pulp, and mixing the pulp with water. The resulting mixture is strained to remove the fibrous material, allowed to settle, and be air dried and then ground into a fine powder.

Culinary Uses: Arrowroot is used as a thickening agent for puddings and sauces such as gravy, it is absolutely tasteless and becomes clear when cooked, it should always be mixed with a cold liquid before cooking. For general use, 1 tablespoon of Arrowroot powder will thicken 1 cup of liquid.
