Description: Black Cohosh is a perennial, tall herbaceous plant, belonging to the Ranunculaceae family. The plant produces a stout, blackish rhizome that is hard and knotty. When cut into pieces and dried, it has a faint, disagreeable odor, but a bitter and acrid taste. The chief constituent of Cimicifuga root is the amorphous resinous substance known as Cimicifugin.

Medicinal Uses: Black Cohosh has been considered useful for arthritis and circulation issues. It has been used in treating delayed and painful menstruation, and for hormone balancing during menopause.

Precautions and Adverse Reactions:

CAUTION: Large doses can cause poisoning. Black Cohosh should not be used during pregnancy or while nursing. Black Cohosh contains a chemical much like estrogen, so those advised by their doctors not to take hormonal birth control should avoid using this herb.
