Description: Whole Chia Seeds are from the Salva Hispanica plant, an annual herb that is a member of the Lamiaceae family. Chia Seeds are very rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and a variety of vitamins, minerals and fiber. Chia seed may be eaten raw raw like sunflower seeds and nuts as a dietary fiber. Chia Seed sprouts are sometimes grown on porous clay figurines like the Chia Pet.

Culinary Uses: Chia sprouts are used in a similar manner as alfalfa sprouts in salads, sandwiches and other dishes. Grinding chia seeds produces a meal called pinole that can be used in baked goods including breads, cakes and biscuits. Chia seeds soaked in water or fruit juice is known in Mexico as the healthful drink chia fresca. The soaked seeds are gelatinous in texture and are also used in porridges and puddings.
