Codonopsis is referred to as dang shen in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) where it has been employed for its healthful qualities for centuries. Often used in herbal formulas in place of ginseng, codonopsis root is considered a gentle qi (energy) tonic and adaptogenic herb in TCM. Native to Asia, Codonopsis pilosula has twining stems with bell-shaped flowers and carrot-shaped roots. Codonopsis root is typically prepared as a decoction or extract.
Codonopsis is a twining perennial and member of the Campanulaceae family. It reaches a length of five feet and has oval leaves and distinct bell shaped greenish purple flowers. It is native to Asia and China, but now cultivated worldwide, sometimes only for its ornamental value. The long, sweet taproot is used extensively in herbalism.
