Description: Gentian, also known as Yellow Gentian, is a perennial herb belonging to the Gentianaceae family. It has a hollow and round stem, elliptical blue-green leaves, a spike of showy yellow-orange flowers, and thick rootstock. The top of the rootstock is surrounded by a cluster of rhizomes and the main taproot can grow as far as 3 ft into the earth. The root has an extremely bitter taste.

Part Used: Root Culinary Uses: Used in alcoholic beverages such as Vermouth, Angostora Bitters and Stockton Bitters. To make a tea, pour 1 cup boiling water over 1 teaspoon of Gentian root, cover and steep 3-5 minutes.

Medicinal Uses: Gentian Root nourishes and strengthens the digestive system and stimulates the appetite. In addition, Gentian is used to relieve heart burn and stomach ache, and to treat gastrointestinal issues and gas. It is considered to support the spleen, pancreas, stomach and kidneys.

Precautions and Adverse Reactions: Gentian is not to be used by persons with ulcers or when stomach irritation or inflammation is present. Consult a health care practitioner prior to use if you are pregnant or suffering from high blood pressure.
