Description: Guarana a woody evergreen perennial climbing shrub, belonging to the Sapindaceae family. It has a long vine with large leaves, and fragrant yellow-white flowers. The fruit is a pear shaped and deep orange. It has a three-sectioned capsule, which bursts open when ripe and releases a dark brown-black seed. The seeds are peeled, dried, roasted and pulverized.

Culinary Uses: Guarana is used in sodas as an energizer and alternative to coffee. It is occasionally mixed with chocolate.
Medicinal Uses: Guarana is a stimulant due to its high caffeine content. It has 2.5 times more caffeine than from coffee. Though Guarana contains caffeine, it is considered to be more slowly absorbed and thus bring a longer lasting effect than coffee.
