Description: Papaya is a high bushy tree, belonging to the Caricaceae family. It has an unbranched trunk with spongy soft wood and hollow in the center, large and palm shaped leaves that terminate in sharp tips, light yellow flowers, and yellow-green thick and fleshy fruit that contains numerous black wrinkled seeds. Papaya contains an enzyme called papain.

Culinary Uses: Papain is used as a meat tenderizer. To make a tea, pour 1 cup boiling water over 1 teaspoon of Papaya leaf, cover and steep 3-5 minutes.
Medicinal Uses: Papaya Leaf is used to help the body break down protein and for digestive disorders and a wide range of disturbances of the gastrointestinal tract. It is also known to help expel intestinal worms. Externally, Papaya Leaf is used to aid the healing of deep or slow healing wounds.
Precautions and Adverse Reactions: Pregnant women should avoid large amounts of Papaya.
