Description: Stevia is a slender perennial herb, belonging to the Compositae (Asteraceae) family. It has a tough rhizome that has slightly branching roots, a semi-woody weak stem, and composite purple and white flowers. All of the plant parts have an intensively sweet taste.

Culinary Uses: Stevia is used to sweeten tea, low calorie foods, yogurt, pickles, baked goods and cereal. Unlike many chemical sweeteners, Stevia's flavor is stable when heated. It can be used instead of sugar to can fruits.

Medicinal Uses: Stevia is commonly used as a sugar substitute for those with diabetes or hypoglycemia, and it may help with high blood pressure. It may also help with heartburn.

Precautions and Adverse Reactions: Stevia is only for use as a dietary supplement.
